The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner at that time. A terrible accident happened on April 15, 1912, as a result of a collision of a passenger liner with an iceberg. More than 1,500 passengers died as a result of the ship sinking, only 706 passengers and crew would survive the disaster. The most famous film based on these tragic events is James Cameron’s classic 1997’s Titanic, which is considered to be one of the most romantic movies in the history of cinema.
1. Titanic was the most expensive film ever made at the time, with an estimated budget of $200 million, meaning that it cost on average $1.03 million for each of its 194 minutes.
2. The hands seen sketching Rose are not Leonardo DiCaprio’s but James Cameron’s. The author of all other drawings from the album is also James Cameron.
3. Titanic is the most Oscar-nominated film with 14 nominations, but not to win in any acting categories.
4. The cost of the most expensive first-class ticket would have been around $4,350 – equivalent to $75,000 dollars today.
5. Gloria Stuart, being only 86, was aged by makeup to play Rose at age 100. She did not find this a pleasant experience. She died of respiratory failure in September 2010 at age 100.
6. The film used a life-size model built on Rosarito Beach in northwestern Mexico, and most of the scenes where the characters were in the water were shot in a pool about one meter deep.
7. Rose’s coat in the final scenes, was several sizes larger. This was done to make her look more vulnerable in the sinking scenes.
8. Kate Winslet was one of the few actors who didn’t want to wear a wetsuit during the water scenes. As a result, she got pneumonia.
9. After James Cameron finished the script, he discovered that there was a real “J. Dawson” who died aboard the Titanic.
10. Johnny Depp was offered the role of Jack Dawson, but turned it down, and considers it a big regret.
11. The incredibly emotional scene in which Rose meets Jack to thank him for saving her life was completely improvised by the actors.
12. In all three hours of the film, Jack never said “I love you,” and Rose did so only once, at the end of the film.
